I’ve been asked frequently enough about my public work to know that there is a great deal of fear out there. People pull me aside at talks. They send me private messages on twitter. They email me from non .edu email addresses. I’ve written about that fear here before as it pertains to women. I maintain that many women are as afraid of compromising their position in the status structure as they are of anything else. But that doesn’t mean the risks of being public aren’t real with concrete effects.
You probably also know I’m an organizations person. So, it should be no surprise that I talk about the role that institutions play in making public scholarship a viable option for all scholars but particularly for the most vulnerable: women, blacks, Latin@s, differently abled, non-hetereo, first gen folks.
